From the Director

Thank you for your interest in St. Albans School. We are honored that you have taken the time to learn more about this wonderful place.

Selecting the right school for a boy is an important decision. I am confident that St. Albans offers a unique educational experience, one that prepares boys for both the rigors of college and the challenges of life.

But why St. Albans? What makes this place special? We stand in the shadow of the National Cathedral, the second largest in the country and a building of incomparable beauty. St. Albans is a spiritual place, a church school affiliated with both the Cathedral and the Episcopal Church. We believe in a core set of Christian values, yet we are committed to a diversity of thought, experience, and perspective. Families of all faiths and cultures are welcomed here.

The School has a nearly 100-year commitment to intellectual pursuit, fostered through a diverse and experienced faculty and evidenced by our accomplished scholars and the range of competitive colleges and universities to which they gain admittance.

The tradition of mens sana in corpore sano—a sound mind in a sound body—is central to St. Albans and is visible through the hundreds of scholar-athletes who represent seventeen different interscholastic sports with pride. Through participation in athletics, each boy develops strengths of both body and character.

The arts, too, play an essential role in the life of a St. Albans student, whether crafting a sculpture or a painting in one of our three art studios, singing in the 100-member Chorale at the Cathedral, or performing on stage, alongside students at the National Cathedral School for Girls, at one of the three Upper School dramatic performances each year.

It is all these things, yes, but it is much more that makes St. Albans one of the truly unique educational institutions in the country. St. Albans is foremost a community of learners, but we are also an extended family, a family that shares meals, hopes, disappointments, and triumphs. St. Albans is a school that values character—we teach our boys that in life, one must choose the hard right over the easy wrong. “Doing the right thing” is more than a cliché here; it is taught and practiced in the classrooms, the hallways, the dining hall, on stage, and on the playing fields.

We urge you to visit St. Albans yourself, to schedule a tour and interview for you or your son. Our application deadline is January 15, and we recommend that families schedule tours and interviews well before then. Please call (202) 537-6440 to schedule your visit.

Sincerely,

Mason Lecky
