Lab Computers

Adobe Creative Suite is on the black computers and the Macs (sometime soon) in the lab. This is where you will find InDesign and Photoshop, the two tools indispensable for yearbook production.

Accessing the Files

The server directory for yearbook is: \\student\shared\clubs\US Yearbook
You will want to map this directory for easy access to it. Mounting a directory is a per computer, per user process -- it will not persist onto other computers. To mount a directory:

  • Open a "My Computer" explorer
  • Go to the Tools menu
  • Choose"Map network drive"
  • Choose a letter name for the drive (Z is good)
  • Type in the location of the folder you want to map, in this case: \\student\shared\clubs\US Yearbook

In that folder, you will find the pages for the book, the templates, artwork, photography, etc for the book. Please be careful - this is a shared file location, and we want to be careful not to accidentally overwrite the hard work of others.

InDesign

Ms. K will periodically give trainings, but you guys should experiment with the program and help in each other. It is a huge program with many ways to manipulate the items on a page - the sky is the limit. Ms.K also has an InDesign curriculum book in which you can follow through the lessons.

Organization

Try to help with organization in whatever way possible. Pictures need to be sorted through and organized - we should never have more than 20-30 pictures per folder. We need people to organize who is writing stories (copy) for various sections of the book, we need funny people who can help with captions. We need help organizing elements on the page so they look nice. We need people to make sure we spell students names right. We need help organizing sports rosters and scores. Folders, files, teams of people, etc that can help with any of this are appreciated.

Other Resources

The Comp Lab has a library of design books, yearbook ideas, etc

The Herff Jones website also has additional information that you will find helpful.
